Emma is a prodigy, they say, very, very talented - on her rests the Bournonville legacy. That is what Emma has heard ever since she joined the National Ballet of Denmark's prestigious school at age six, having begun dancing as a toddler.

Now, she has aced her exams, breezed through her apprentice years and has finally received a corps contract with the ballet company she has strived to become a part of for all this time. And not only that, but the first thing she does as part of the corps is to land the coveted role of 1st sylph in artistic director, Nicolas Dam's reimagining of the Bournonville classic, La Sylphide.

The role of the witch, Madge, usually danced by an experienced character dancer, is given to Amelia Romano, a second year corps dancer from one of New York's big name companies. It creates an uproar, but Nicolas doesn't yield. Amelia is to dance the role with mentoring by the popular character dancer and former principal, the Swedish Jenny Olsson.

And while these intense rehearsals unfold, Emma is busy looking to buy a new apartment with her boyfriend, Rupert Aagaard, whom she's been dating for three years. A year older than her at nineteen, he is known as a great technician and dance partner, with a steady personality. He is safe. Familiar.

And not at all as interesting as the ferocious and strong Amelia who acts like acting were her job.

This run of La Sylphide might come to change the trajectory of Emma's life.
